Young Children's Representation of Spatial Information Acquired From Maps
نویسندگان
چکیده
The early development of the ability to acquire integrated knowledge of a space from a map was investigated in 130 children, 4 to 7 years of age. Experiment 1 demonstrated that all 6and 7-yearolds and many 4and 5-year-olds could learn the layout of a large playhouse composed of six adjoined rooms by memorizing a map. Children who learned the map before entering the playhouse more quickly learned a route through it than children who were not exposed to the map, and older children performed significantly better than younger children. In Experiment 2 preschoolers learned a map of a space that contained six spatially separated small rooms within one large room. Children could therefore view the entire configuration of smaller rooms as they traveled around the larger room. Preschoolers performed significantly better in Experiment 2 than in Experiment 1, and the majority of them performed perfectly or almost perfectly. Taken together; the findings help to clarify young children's map-reading abilities in several respects and suggest that preschoolers' abilities are more substantial than has been assumed or demonstrated previously.

Words and maps: developmental changes in mental models of spatial information acquired from descriptions and depictions.
People acquire spatial information from many sources, including maps, verbal descriptions, and navigating in the environment. The different sources present spatial information in different ways. For example, maps can show many spatial relations simultaneously, but in a description, each spatial relation must be presented sequentially. The present research investigated how these source differenc...
متن کاملARTICLE WITH PEER COMMENTARIES AND RESPONSE Seeing the big picture: map use and the development of spatial cognition
While making one of his first orbits of the earth, John Glenn said, 'I can see the whole state of Florida laid out just like on a map' (Wilford, 1981). Glenn was referring to the unique perspective that one can gain by viewing the earth from space. Looking down at the earth allows us to see spatial information, such as the layout of an entire state, that can be almost impossible to perceive dir...
متن کاملAnalogical processes in children's understanding of spatial representations.
We propose that map reading can be construed as a form of analogical mapping. We tested 2 predictions that follow from this claim: First, young children's patterns of performance in map reading tasks should parallel those found in analogical mapping tasks; and, second, children will benefit from guided alignment instructions that help them see the relational correspondences between the map and ...
متن کاملFusion of Thermal Infrared and Visible Images Based on Multi-scale Transform and Sparse Representation
Due to the differences between the visible and thermal infrared images, combination of these two types of images is essential for better understanding the characteristics of targets and the environment. Thermal infrared images have most importance to distinguish targets from the background based on the radiation differences, which work well in all-weather and day/night conditions also in land s...
متن کاملThe Cartography and Spatial Representation Traditions at Penn State
It is impossible to specify with any precision when the "cartography program" originated at Penn State. From the department's start in 1945, Penn State geography has been rooted in maps and mapping. Maps have been viewed as both an integral part of the research process and the result of research, rather than simply as a summary of research findings. Recent work using spatial adaptive filtering ...
